Compiled From Wire Services

Alexei Yashin returned to the Ottawa Senators, signing a new five-year contract that makes him the highest-paid player on the NHL team.

General manager Pierre Gauthier would not give details of the contract, which includes this season and four more, but said it makes Yashin the club’s highest-paid player.

Yashin, 22, said he would never play for the Senators again during a bitter contract dispute that lasted more than a year. But when Gauthier replaced Randy Sexton early in December, the road was paved for the star center’s return.

Switzerland’s 5-3 upset win over Ukraine in the 1996 World Junior Hockey Championship in Marlboro, Mass., was good news for both Canada and the United States.

Switzerland’s win advances Canada to the tournament’s semifinals and improves the chances of the United States advancing.

For the United States to move ahead, the team needs a win against Finland today coupled with a Ukraine loss or tie in its upcoming game against Canada.

In Camrose, Alberta, the USA Junior Selects, the first U.S. team to enter the Viking Cup hockey tournament since its inception in 1981, defeated the defending champion Russian Select 18 Team, 4-2.
