Bonners Ferry 40, Kellogg 37
The Badgers endured 13 lead changes and five ties, before getting the go-ahead basket from senior post Jan Cartwright with 3:51 left in the game in a A-2 District I-11 girls opener Wednesday night.
Guard Amy Regehr stole the ball and fed senior forward Kelli Ripatti for a transition basket at 3:47, which left Bonners Ferry ahead 38-35.
Post Laura Rauenhorst answered for the Wildcats at 3:32, but that would be Kellogg’s last basket of the game.
“This week we really had to look at ourselves, and ask ourselves who we are - do we really believe in ourselves and the team,” Badgers coach Jim Nash said. “I think it took us until the second half to figure it out - the fact that we are a team. The first half we didn’t play as a team.”
Bonners Ferry shot 30 percent from the field in the opening half and trailed 29-28 at intermission.
The Badgers turned up the defensive intensity in the second half, and drilled their first three field goals of the third quarter.
The long-range shooting of senior Jessie Mercado kept Kellogg competitive in the third quarter. Mercado’s back-to-back 3-pointer in the final 2:47 gave the Wildcats a 29-26 lead.
Mercado finished with a game-high 17 points. Guard Hollie Derbyshire added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Three Badgers broke double-figure scoring, led by 13 points and five steals from Regehr. Nearing chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ripatti finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
