Records Fall In Reno
Michael Johnson set a world indoor 400-meter record with a time of 44.97 seconds in the Reno Air Games, a meet highlighted by glitz and gambling.
The old record of 45.02 was set by Danny Everett in 1992.
Jackie Joyner-Kersee broke her own American indoor record in the women’s 50 meters, clocking 6.67 seconds.
The 50 is a seldom-run race.
Maria Mutola kept alive her unbeaten streak in the women’s 800 meters, finishing in 2 minutes, 0.95 seconds to win by nearly 6 seconds.
The meet marked what is believed to be the first time legal betting was permitted in the United States on a track meet outside the Olympics. Odds were posted on seven of the 16 events.
Betting was light, with only $7,000 wagered on the races an hour before the meet began.
