Borque Torques Buffalo

Associated Press

Ray Bourque’s power-play goal with 1:52 left in the third period gave the Boston Bruins a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night in Buffalo, N.Y.

The defenseman snuck into the slot and took a pass from Adam Oates before snapping the shot between the legs of Buffalo goaltender Dominik Hasek for his third goal of the season.

Buffalo, which lost its second straight, was short-handed after Dave Hannan was penalized for tripping with 2:28 remaining in the game.

The 2-1 score marked the fourth straight game Buffalo has played decided by that margin. They are 2-2 during that span.

Vincent Riendeau stopped 20 shots for the Bruins, while Dominik Hasek made 29 saves for the Sabres.

Boston took a 1-0 lead when Bryan Smolinski scored his third goal of the season with 1:11 in a close-checking first period. Smolinski got a pass from Dave Reid at the right faceoff circle, faked Hasek to his knees and flipped a backhander into the net.

The goal came less than a minute after Buffalo’s Derek Plante had a goal waved off after slapping a loose puck over his head past Riendeau.

Embattled Mike Peluso had an assist and the game-winning goal in leading New Jersey to a victory over Florida, its first road victory of the season.

With the score tied at 2, Bobby Holik crossed a pass to a streaking Peluso, who tucked it past John Vanbiesbrouck’s stick side at 12:50 of the third period. It was Peluso’s first goal of the season.

Stephane Richer added an empty-net goal with 21.6 seconds left, his fifth of the season. The Panthers, who have never scored in the third period against New Jersey, had just three shots in the final 20 minutes.

Vanbiesbrouck made 24 saves, some spectacular, but he’s 0-4-1 in his last five decisions against New Jersey.

Oilers 2, Mighty Ducks 0

Edmonton, Alberta

Kelly Buchberger and Scott Thornton each scored a goal as Edmonton beat Anaheim despite a great performance by Mighty Ducks goaltender Guy Hebert.

Hebert, who came into the game with a dismal 4.79 goals-against average, was the game’s true star. The Mighty Ducks relied on him to stop a career-best 43 shots, and barely stayed within a goal of the Oilers with pesky checking.

Hebert was doubly sharp on Edmonton’s power plays, stopping Oiler forwards Jason Arnott and Doug Weight on separate chances as the forwards stood unattended in the crease.

Kings 4, Red Wings 4

Detroit

Dan Quinn’s goal capped a threegoal third period and Kelly Hrudey stopped Sergei Fedorov on a penalty shot in overtime as Los Angeles overcame four Fedorov goals to tie Detroit.

Detroit was awarded the penalty shot with 1:08 remaining in overtime when Kings defenseman Michel Petit deliberately knocked the net off its posts.

Fedorov skated within 15 feet, but Hrudey kicked aside Fedorov’s wrist shot with his right foot.

With 5:50 remaining in regulation, Quinn found himself alone in front of Vernon and swatted a rebound of Alex Zhitnik’s shot past Vernon for his first goal of the season.
