Ex-Girlfriend Questioned
Police were investigating allegations that four Miami-area men were hired to murder the mother of Marlins outfielder Gary Sheffield.
Sheffield’s former girlfriend, Toni Fort, was scheduled to take a lie-detector test this morning, The Miami Herald reported in today’s editions.
Fort, 30, denied any involvement in a plot to kill Sheffield’s mother, Betty Jones, who lives in St. Petersburg.
Fort said she and Sheffield have been engaged since August, and that she talked with him as recently as Wednesday night. She said she did not know that Sheffield had told reporters they had broken up.
Fort said she was taking the test for Sheffield’s sake, “for his peace of mind.”
