Both Chewelah Teams Take Tourney Openers

NORTHEAST A

Chewelah doubled its pleasure, joining the Lakeside boys and Colfax girls as survivors in the loser-out games that opened the Northeast A tournament at Mead on Friday night.

The Chewelah boys advanced to a 3:30 game tonight against second-seeded Medical Lake while Lakeside will meet topseeded Riverside at 8:30.

On the girls side, Chewelah meets top-seeded Lakeside at 7 p.m. tonight and Colfax tackles No. 2 Riverside, ranked sixth in the state.

In all cases, the higher seeded teams advanced. The tournament is double-elimination for the final four teams.

Boys

Chewelah 69, Newport 51

Jeremy Rodgers scored 19 points as the Cougars (15-7) outscored the Grizzlies (10-11) 22-9 in the third quarter to take charge.

Greg Belzer added 14 points as the Cougars controlled the inside. Chewelah had four players in double figures.

Lakeside 64, Freeman 56

The Eagles (14-6) used a big third quarter to take a six-point lead and then proceeded to hit 9 of 13 free throws down the stretch to hold on against the Scotties (11-10).

Bill Bender hit all four of his free throws in scoring eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Cory Oberst scored 22 points for Freeman, which kept pace with the Eagles except for the third-quarter lapse.

Brooke Hansen scored 15 points and Angie Hall had nine points and nine rebounds as the Bulldogs (16-6) weathered a late run by the Stags (6-14).

Colfax was up by 10 in the first quarter before second-half turnovers allowed Deer Park to creep within four.

Jaidean Watson had three 3-pointers and scored 13 points to rally the Stags.

Hayden Kristianson scored 14 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, as the Cougars (11-10) beat the Grizzlies (11-10).

The Cougars took control of the game by outscoring the Grizzlies 19-8 in the second quarter to open a 28-16 lead.

Stacie Bauer also had 14 points for Chewelah.
