Booker’s Jumper Buries Beavers
Pac-10
Jamie Booker converted a threepoint play with 6.7 seconds and Washington ended a 12-game road losing streak with a 65-62 victory over Oregon State in a Pacific-10 basketball game Saturday in Corvallis, Ore.
Washington won despite coach Bob Bender’s ejection with 7:07 left in the first half for a second technical foul. That sparked a 20-0 run for Oregon State.
The spurt turned Washington’s 19-10 lead into a 30-19 deficit.
By halftime, the Huskies had closed Oregon State’s lead to 33-29.
Freshman center Mark Sanford led the Huskies with 21 points and guard Jason Hamilton added 15. Forward Brent Barry led Oregon State with 25 points and nine rebounds.
The Beavers took a 63-62 lead with 1:30 left when Mustapha Hoff made two free throws. Sanford tried to tie the game with a layup but Oregon State’s Jerohn Brown blocked the shot.
The Beavers’ J.D. Vetter then missed two free throws with 36.4 seconds that set up Booker’s winning shot. Booker drove into the lane and was fouled by Barry while making a leaning jumpshot.
Oregon State didn’t get off a final shot because Stephane Brown’s inbounds pass with 3.6 seconds was deflected and stolen by Washington.
Oregon State coach Jim Anderson disputed the game-winning shot.
“That last play was a definite charge,” he said. “I just saw it on TV three times. I’m very upset. I’m very down right now.”
After Bender was ejected the Huskies were coached by assistant Ray Giacoletti.
“It’s a great credit to these kids for hanging in there. Bob Bender has prepared them. It’s a great credit to him how much poise the kids showed and hung in there,” he said.”Oregon State made their run and our kids hung in there and whittled it away,” he said. “We were down by four at halftime and that was a workable number for us to try to come out in the second half and be successful.”
