Seattle Pacific At Washington State
The Cougars (13-8 overall) step down a level to face the NCAA Division II Falcons (17-7) in a game that was scheduled late to fill a vacant spot on WSU’s schedule. Tipoff at Friel Court is set for 7 p.m.
At a glance
This first meeting between the schools since 1983 should prove to be little more than a tuneup for WSU, which has a much more important game Saturday against Pac-10 rival Washington in Seattle. But there are a couple of reasons for the Cougars to pay attention - such as Emile Shephard and Josh Behrens, the Falcons’ top two scorers. Shephard is a gifted 6-foot-8 junior forward, who leads the team in scoring and rebounding and averages more than two blocks a game, and Behrens, a 6-2, junior, can shoot it from the perimeter. But Kevin Eastman, who is only one win away from becoming the first first-year coach to post a winning record at WSU since 1927, has plenty of weapons with which to fire back. Shamon Antrum has scored 20 or more points in his last three games and Isaac Fontaine has been as solid as as senior all season. In addition, the Cougars have been getting some great play inside recently from Mark Hendrickson and Tavares Mack, along with some excellent minutes off the bench from 6-11 senior David Vik and freshman guard Chris Griffin. And by the way … the Cougars haven’t lost a nonconference home game since Dec. 14, 1989 when Idaho slipped out of Friel Court with a 56-52 win.
