What: Top three boys and girls teams advance to state tournaments in Seattle beginning March 8. Friday’s semifinals winners move on; third-place teams decided Saturday at Richland, girls at 8, boys at 9:30.
Radio: KTRW (970) will carry boys games from Cheney today and all games involving GSL teams from Richland Friday and Saturday.
Boys
Top seeds: Mead won the GSL by two games and avenged two league losses by beating Lewis and Clark by 20 for the district championship. Richland won the Big Nine, but lost at home to Kamiakin in overtime for the top seed.
Second-round pairings: Lewis and Clark-Pasco winner plays Central ValleyKamiakin winner at 7 p.m., losers play at 4. Rogers-Richland winner plays MeadEisenhower winner at 9, losers play at 5:30. All are at Pasco on Friday.
Big Nine players to watch: Doug Schulz, Richland, 6-foot-5 forward, Big Nine Player of Year, 17.3 average, third in the league. Neal Robertson, Richland, 5-8 junior guard, 17.9 average, first in Big Nine, first-team all-star. Also on first team: Glen McCloud, Kamiakin, 6-foot guard, 13.5 average and Bryan Williamson, Kamiakin, 6-4 guard, 14.3 average.
Noteable: The two times Kamiakin played at Richland, 5,000 fans packed into the Bomber gym. The Pasco game drew more than 4,500… . The only game not to be played at Richland is a loser-out game Saturday at 12:30 at Pasco. Any game involving Richland or Pasco at that time will be played on the “neutral” court… . CV is in its seventh regional, Kamiakin its sixth… . Rogers is the last of the 18 GSL and Big Nine teams to play in a regional.

Noteable: Pasco’s Holly Whitemarsh, a 6-foot junior, was leading the league in scoring at 18.4 when she got tired of basketball and quit… . Mead has been in the regional all eight years.
