Coach K Out Indefinitely
Mike Krzyzewski, one of the most prominent coaches in college basketball, was released from the hospital after being treated for back problems and is not expected to coach Duke for several weeks.
Krzyzewski, 47, underwent surgery at Duke University Hospital on Oct. 22 to repair a displaced disc. He missed 10 days of work but returned ahead of schedule.
Last week, he complained of fatigue and mild discomfort and said he had had trouble sleeping. On Friday, following a checkup, he was admitted to the hospital.
Associate coach Pete Gaudet, who directed Duke on Saturday at Georgia Tech, will continue as acting head coach. It was the first game Krzyzewski had missed in 20 years as a head coach.
The Internal Revenue Service says former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian and his wife, Lois, owe $148,893 in back taxes and penalties, mainly because of more than 200 season tickets he received when he was coach.
The IRS said many of the tickets should be construed as income, claiming the tickets amounted to $174,650 in income from 1987 through 1991.
Tarkanian and his wife are challenging the IRS opinion in U.S. Tax Court.
