Post Falls To Vote On Tax Help For Developers
Post Falls has scheduled a Feb. 7 special election to let voters decide whether they should approve offers of tax assistance to developers.
Post Falls residents have until Friday to register for the election. Voters can register at Post Falls City Hall or the Kootenai County Courthouse.
The special election is the result of initiative petitions circulated in town last year. More than 1,000 voters signed petitions calling for voter approval of any city use of tax-increment financing.
Post Falls is considering offering such financing to speed up development of International Expo and to lure Micron Technology Inc. But the Kootenai County Property Owners Association is fighting any tax-increment assistance without voter approval.
Tax-increment financing allows a city to sell bonds to finance infrastructure such as roads and utilities for a new development, then use the developer’s tax payments to pay off the bonds.
The city has asked a judge to delay the special election. A hearing on the matter is scheduled next week.
