Cory Has Big Night For Mead

GSL girls

Jodi Cory scored a careerhigh 22 points to spark second-ranked Mead to a come-from-behind 60-49 win over University in a Greater Spokane League girls basketball game at U-High on Friday night.

The Titans bolted to an early lead and might have built an insurmountable advantage had it not been for Cory, who scored 15 points in the first half.

“University really played well, they gave us everything we could handle,” Mead coach Jeanne Helfer said. “It was close to being a blowout and Jodi kept us in it.”

Sydney Perno, who scored nine points before fouling out, and Sally Jamison controlled the inside for University, forcing the Panthers to unload from the perimeter.

Mead only hit four of 19 3-pointers.

The Titans were leading 19-14 after one quarter and 35-31 at the half. It was still 44-41 for University after three quarters when the Titans went cold.

“We just couldn’t buy a shot,” U-High coach Bob Finn said. “We were 1 for 13 and only one of those was a 3-pointer.”

“It’s a credit to my team, they didn’t panic and settled down and found a way to win,” Helfer said.

Stacy Clinesmith, who struggled for three quarters, finished with 20 points, hitting all 11 of her free throws. The Panthers hit 7 of 10 foul shots in the fourth quarter.

“They took Clinesmith out and we needed someone to step up and Jodi did,” Helfer said.

Tracy Ford led University with 16 points, the first player to score in double figures against Cory this year.

“She never gives up that many points,” Helfer said, “but Jodi answered that on the offensive end.”

Mead (7-0, 11-0) remained tied for the league-lead with idle Shadle Park (7-0, 9-2) heading into Tuesday night’s showdown at Spokane Falls Community College at 6.

The loss dropped University (5-2, 8-3) into a tie for third with Ferris (5-2, 9-2) The two will meet at Ferris Tuesday at 8.
