CV Gets Defensive In 2ot Gsl Boys Win Over Prep

Central Valley used a wide range of defenses to fuel a second-half rally and hit 7 of 10 free throws in two overtimes to edge Gonzaga Prep 80-78 in a Greater Spokane League boys basketball game at CV on Tuesday night.

It was the Bears’ balance - five players in double figures - against 6-foot-4 Gonzaga Prep sophomore Paul Sweeny, who poured in 35 points.

CV geared its defense to stop Prep guard Tyler Jordan, who was averaging 14 points a game and drained 24 3-pointers in the first seven GSL games. That part worked as Jordan was held to two 3s, but Sweeney picked up the slack.

Sweeney, whose career high was 19, had 24 in the first half, which ended in a 33-33 tie. The Bullpups (3-5, 5-7) built a lead of almost 10 points in the second half before a variety of defenses allowed the Bears (5-3, 7-5) to get back in the game.

CV had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation but couldn’t get a shot off.

G-Prep turned the ball over with 20 seconds left in the second overtime, trailing by two, and fouled Jeremy Nesbitt with 2 seconds left. Nesbitt could have iced the game from the line but missed his free throw. However, he grabbed his own rebound to seal the win.

Nesbitt finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Corby Schuh also had 17 points with Geoff Courchaine adding 16 and Jeff Jensen a career-high 15.
