Ewu Investigation Continues
The Spokane County deputy prosecutor assigned to the Eastern Washington University case involving football coach Mike Kramer and former player Antonio Morgan needs more information to determine whether any charges will be filed.
Morgan has accused Kramer of slapping him across the face while the two were alone in Kramer’s office Jan. 12. Kramer has denied the allegation.
“I have reviewed the initial reports that were turned in by (EWU campus police),” deputy prosecutor Dave Nehen said Friday. “At this point, I am anticipating additional reports to be turned in and I don’t know if I’ll be getting those before Wednesday. So, I’ll need to review those before I make any decisions.”
Before reviewing the case, Nehen had anticipated determining whether there is enough evidence to charge Kramer by Friday afternoon.
EWU director of public safety Ron Sperber had presented Nehen with statements from five people connected to the case.
General: Washington State senior associate athletic director Marcia Saneholtz is among five finalists for the athletic director’s job at San Diego State University.
She said she expects to hear from SDSU president Thomas Day on his selection by the end of next week.
Football: New Utah State coach John L. Smith, formerly at the University of Idaho, has hired Bob Petrino as his offensive coordinator.
Petrino was Idaho’s offensive coordinator before going on to Arizona State and, most recently, Nevada. He joins his younger brother, Paul, on Smith’s staff.
Idaho is scrambling to complete its 1995 schedule.
It was basically set three months ago, but that changed when Idaho waffled on its Big West Conference intentions. UI ultimately decided to join the Big West.
“It could be (finalized in) a day or a month,” athletic director Pete Liske said. “We’re working hard on it.”
Most schools have completed their schedules, complicating Idaho’s chore. Asked if UI may face Division II foes, Liske said, “Anything’s possible at this point.”
Junior hockey: The Spokane Braves used a four-goal third-period outburst to skate past Golden 6-4 in Revelstoke, British Columbia, on Friday night.
Mike Brunette scored a short-handed goal and Darin Talotti followed with a power-play goal to snap a 3-3 tie and break open the game for the Braves.
Scott Parker, Ryan Oscar, Derek Ames and Ryan Shipley also had goals for the Braves. Goaltender Ben Armstrong turned back 32 shots, 12 each in the first and third periods.
