Stars & Stripes, dedicating its victory to a senior crew member who died a day earlier, won by default in America’s Cup racing after Young America quit midway because of equipment failure.

Donn Weust, 47, who was responsible for moving Stars & Stripes in and out of the water, died Sunday of a heart attack in the compound’s workshop. He was a member of the shore support team and had worked for Dennis Conner’s America’s Cup teams since 1985.

Weust was found 2 to 3 minutes after he collapsed. He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he never regained consciousness.

Stars & Stripes had the race well in control when Young America pulled out of the race with 6 miles to go in the 18.55-mile course because of equipment failure. The Pact ‘95 syndicate has been plagued by equipment problems.

The Stars & Stripes victory, its first showing in the second round, lifts Conner’s team to a first-place tie with Young America. xxxx
