Marvelous Maddux Mystifies Phillies

Greg Maddux surrendered only five hits and one earned run and David Justice provided the offense with a three-run homer as the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 Saturday night at Veterans Stadium.

Maddux has allowed eight earned runs in his last eight starts, lowering his league-leading ERA to 1.78.

Giants 4, Padres 1

San Francisco

Mark Carreon homered and drove in three runs, and William VanLandingham pitched 7 solid innings as San Francisco earned a win.

In his sixth start since spending time on the disabled list with injured ribs, VanLandingham earned his first victory since Aug. 10, 1994 against Chicago.

Dodgers 5, Rockies 4

Los Angeles

Roberto Kelly scored on Chris Gwynn’s basesloaded sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as Los Angeles beat Colorado and replaced the Rockies atop the N.L. West.

Cubs 8, Cardinals 7

Chicago

Sammy Sosa capped a four-RBI performance by singling home the tying run and scoring the winner in the seventh inning as Chicago rallied past St. Louis.

Sosa, who leads the N.L. with 52 RBIs, hit a three-run homer in the first, and doubled and scored in the third.

Expos 11, Marlins 8

Miami

Jeff Fassero broke a personal four-game losing streak as Montreal turned the tables on Florida. It was the Expos third win in 12 games.

Reds 5, Mets 4

New York

Ron Gant hit one of four solo home runs for Cincinnati, ending New York’s season-high threegame winning streak.

Pete Harnisch (1-6) hadn’t allowed more than one homer in a game this season.

Astros 11, Pirates 0

Houston

Shane Reynolds pitched a six-hitter and Brian Hunter extended his hitting streak to 11 games with three hits as high-scoring Houston beat Pittsburgh. Houston has scored 65 runs in its last six games and Hunter is 27 for 58 during his hitting streak.

Clearing the bases

Darren Daulton of Philadelphia was ejected for the second time this week when he argued a called third strike with home plate umpire Charlie Reliford in the fourth.

The Phillies are 17-5 against the N.L. East, giving them the best inter-division record in baseball… . In winning the Cy Young Award each of the last three seasons, Atlanta’s Greg Maddux has compiled a 2.08 ERA. The composite major league ERA for those years was 4.11. It’s the largest three-year differential between an individual and the league in history.

Terry Mulholland, who had bone chips removed from his left elbow June 7, returns to the Giants’ active roster Tuesday night against the Reds in Cincinnati. Mulholland is 2-6 this season… . The Cardinals used the disabled list for the 14th time this season, placing top hitter Bernard Gilkey on the 15-day D.L. (retroactive to June 28) with a strained right elbow. Gilkey, hitting .311, was replaced on the roster by Geronimo Pena, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list… . St. Louis catcher Tom Pagnozzi left the game in the seventh inning with a thumb injury and was taken to an area hospital for precautionary X-rays.

Craig Biggio became the ninth Astro to reach 1,000 hits when he singled in the seventh.

The Rockies signed their No. 1 draft pick, Tennessee first baseman Todd Helton, and assigned him to their Class A farm club in Ashville of the South Atlantic League.
