Bowman Wants More, Signs Three-Year Pact To Remain With Detroit
Scotty Bowman, who guided the Detroit Red Wings to the best regular-season record and their first Stanley Cup finals appearance in 29 years, has signed a three-year contract with the team.
The Red Wings announced Monday that Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history, has agreed to return as coach and director of player personnel.
“Quite simply, Scotty has been a winner throughout his career and he’ll continue to be a winner in Detroit,” senior vice president Jim Devellano said.
Encouraged by progress in lease negotiations, the New Jersey Devils and their landlord delayed court action and gave themselves another week to find a way to keep the Stanley Cup champions from leaving the state.
In a 5-minute hearing before Superior Court Judge Peter Ciolino in Hackensack, N.J., attorneys for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority agreed to postpone until July 11 a request for a temporary restraining order to prevent a Devils’ move.
The Devils, who had been considering a lucrative offer from Nashville, Tenn., agreed in exchange not to move until next Tuesday. The team had filed a termination notice last week, saying it would be free to move Thursday.
New Jersey signed center Bob Carpenter and right wing Bill Guerin to new contracts.
Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
