Everyone Knows That It Was Really Hal Holbrook

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

For years now, the identity of “Deep Throat” has elicited one wild guess after another. The source for much of the Watergate reporting of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein has been identified variously as John Dean, Alexander Haig and even Martha Mitchell.

Now comes the latest conjecture: ABC news correspondent Diane Sawyer.

Rabbi Baruch Korff, 80, former head of the proNixon National Citizen’s Committee for Fairness to the President, admits he has no evidence. But alleging that Sawyer once was a minor press aide to White House Secretary Ron Ziegler, Korff said, “Everything points to it.”

When told the news, Sawyer, according to friends, “laughed so hard, she could hardly stand it and said, ‘That’s priceless’ and ‘Oh my God.”’

Loose talk

ABC News correspondent Sam Donaldson on the fire that parched part of his New Mexico ranch: “This is all part of the perils of ranching - drought, fire, pestilence, low prices, all of that.”

And even he has problems with ‘Pocahontas’

Uncle Sam turns 219 today.

He’d ferret out just the right songs to sing

The pianist who performed for Bill Clinton at a recent United Nations party in San Francisco is nothing if not open-minded. George Michalski told the San Francisco Chronicle that he would play for a Republican politician, too. “I’m an entertainer,” he said. “I’d play for Newt Gingrich if he came up with enough dough.”

Once a Jersey boy, always a Jersey boy

Bruce Springsteen broke with his E Street Band very publicly a couple of years ago. Yet he’s recorded four songs with the group in February, and apparently he plans to record more this summer. Now comes word he and the band may tour Australia.

Not only that, she’s in extremely well condition

The quote: “She’s doing good.” The speaker: A spokeswoman for Elizabeth Taylor. The occasion: News that Taylor, 63, is recovering from hip-replacement surgery.

And, of course, we all know Dan as a real fun guy

Responding to criticism about his appearance on David Letterman’s “Late Night” show, CBS anchor Dan Rather got a little defensive. “I didn’t blow up a pickup truck like ‘Dateline NBC,”’ he said. “I didn’t stand in front of a picture of the Capitol and make it look like I was really there like correspondent Cokie Roberts on ‘ABC World News Tonight.’ I just had a little fun.”

Repeat after us: This is reality, this is a TV show

Seems actor/musician (and we use the terms loosely) Jamie Walters is getting a lot of heat from female fans of his show, “Beverly Hills 90210,” ever since his character knocked his girlfriend Donna (played by Tori Spelling) down a staircase.
