Chase Away Those Summertime Slows

Betsy Carosella The Spokesman-

Summer hiatus is in full force and most organizations won’t meet again until fall, and fund-raising activities have slowed down.

During the school year we sometimes get so caught up in doing and going that we don’t make time for people. Long evenings and warm weather (on the presumption we’ll experience some for any period of time) provide a perfect opportunity to get together with friends and family and simply enjoy each other’s company.

However, if you and your children are already beginning to find it difficult to enjoy each other’s company because they have too much time on their hands and are bored, don’t despair. There’s still time to help them learn new skills - and give you a break.

Several summer residential and day camps have openings for certain sessions. Contact Camp Fire Boys and Girls, Girl Scouts, YWCA, YMCA, churches and other groups that sponsor camps to learn about their offerings. Often, it’s not necessary to belong to the organization to participate in camp.

Also, consider classes: The Spokane Art School still has openings for classes in drawing, beading, watercolor, printmaking, cartooning and paper mache sculpture.

Its third session will be July 17-27; Session 4, July 31-Aug. 10; and Session 5, Aug. 14-24.

There are even classes for adults. Beginning July 24, SAS will offer 14 five-week classes geared especially for those who want to continue their art education: “Africa in Art and Culture,” “Traditional Painting,” “Color Slide Photography,” “Wheelthrowing and Handbuilding,” and “Figure Drawing.”

There will also be intensive half-day classes on Fridays and Saturdays for those who can’t attend during the work week.

Four sessions remain in the summer Friday-workshop series. Each session is two consecutive Fridays from either 9 a.m.-noon, or 1-4 p.m. on July 7 and 14, July 21 and 28, Aug. 4 and 11, and Aug. 18 and 25.

Workshops include “Ceramics: Handbuilding and Wheelthrowing,” “Drawing and Watercolor” and “Sculpturing Clay with Found Objects.”

Saturday workshops include “Papermaking,” July 15, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; “Color Slide Photography,” July 22, 1-5 p.m.; and “Photograph Your Artwork,” Aug. 29, 1-5 p.m.

Brush up your winter art

The Spokane Art School is seeking original, high quality work from artists in the western states to be juried during Yultide ‘95, the school’s annual art show and sale.

Artists of ceramics, paintings, prints and other mixed media are invited to audition. The show will also feature holiday items: cards, wreaths, wrapping paper, clothing, toys, ornaments …

Application deadline for Yuletide jurying is Sept. 18 and space is limited. There will be a $25 registration fee, due upon acceptance.

To apply for Yuletide ‘95, call SAS at 328-0900, or stop by at N920 Howard.

SAS has a jewel

Gay Gardner, head of Spokane Art School’s jewelry department, has been selected to exhibit two of her pieces in the Bellevue Art Museum’s Pacific Northwest Annual Juried Art Show. Gardner was one of 120 Northwest artists selected from 1,023 for participation.

The show will be open July 28 to Sept. 10 in the museum on the third floor of Bellevue Square. The show is in conjunction with the museum’s 49th Pacific Northwest Arts and Crafts, July 28-30.
