Orioles Cut Losses, Drop Fernandez
American League
The Baltimore Orioles Sunday finally stopped waiting for a discouraging situation to get better. Twenty months and six victories after they signed him to a three-year, $9 million contract, the Orioles waived pitcher Sid Fernandez.
The veteran left-hander, who had lost his spot in the team’s starting rotation and recently had contemplated retirement, was placed on waivers. If he’s not claimed by another major league club - and he almost certainly won’t be - he officially will be released on Thursday and will become a free agent able to sign with any team. The Orioles will have to pay the remaining portion of Fernandez’s contract, approximately $4.5 million.
The Orioles ended up paying Fernandez $1.5 million per victory. He had a 6-10 record and a 5.59 earned run average in his 27 appearances as an Oriole, 26 of them starts.
He’s winless since last July 15, and is 0-4 with a 7.39 ERA this season.
