3rd Mariner Joins A.L. All-Star Team
Tino Martinez of the Seattle Mariners will replace injured Oakland Athletics first baseman Mark McGwire for tonight’s All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas.
McGwire sustained a mild concussion after being hit in the helmet by a David Cone fastball on Saturday and won’t be able to play.
A.L. manager Buck Showalter on Sunday night picked Martinez to take McGwire’s spot on the roster.
Martinez hit a grand slam home run Sunday to help the Mariners beat the Cleveland Indians 9-3.
For the season, he is batting .299 with 18 homers and 58 RBIs.
He joins Mariners teammates Randy Johnson and Edgar Martinez on the A.L. All-Star squad.
