Raiders Welcomed Home
After 13 years in Los Angeles, the Raiders are being heartily welcomed back to Oakland.
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to approve the deal that would make the Raiders the first U.S. sports team to return to its roots. The Oakland City Council gave its seal of approval, 9-0.
The city and county voted to approve a 16-year agreement with Raiders owner Al Davis and to issue up to $225 million in bonds to pay for stadium modernization, including the 175 luxury boxes Davis covets.
The NFL is meeting Friday in Chicago to consider the move. League officials have said it must be approved by a threefourths vote of clubs.
San Diego quarterback Stan Humphries, who led the Chargers to their first Super Bowl appearance last season, agreed to terms on a new four-year contract.
Humphries, 30, was in the third year of a previous four-year deal.
The Denver Broncos have terminated the contract of safety Dennis Smith and placed linebacker Karl Mecklenburg on the reserve-retired list.
