Devils To Stay Put

Compiled From Wire Services

The New Jersey Devils and their landlord announced that they had signed an agreement that will keep the Stanley Cup champions in New Jersey for at least one year.

At a news conference, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the two sides had reached tentative agreement on a deal that would make the Meadowlands Arena the Devils’ home for the next 12 years.

The longer-term deal is subject to the signing of an agreement on or before Sept. 15.

Joel Kobert, attorney for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, said both parties signed an agreement today that will commit the Devils to the one-year lease.

If no agreement is reached by Sept. 15, the sports authority will revise its motion for a temporary restraining order to keep the team in the state.
