Thomas Morris Spokane

Private service for Thomas H. Morris, 60, will be held. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Bay City, Mich., Mr. Morris died Wednesday.

He was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic, and for the past few years worked in appliance repair.

He had lived in Spokane for 12 years and was a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 2.

He is survived by his companion, Terry; two sons, Thomas and Donald Morris; six daughters, Dee Reed, Jeannette Hibbler, Phyllis Morris, Michelle Coe, Jenniffer Morris and Carla Morrison; seven siblings and 19 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Edith Brincken Potlatch, Idaho

Service for Edith Brincken, 94, is set for 10 a.m. Monday at Potlatch Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Freeze Cemetery north of Potlatch. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brincken, who died Wednesday at home, was born in Kemmerer, Wyo.

She homesteaded near Deep Creek, Wash., with her family when they moved to Idaho from Ohio.

She and her husband, Fred “Fritz”, farmed and raised registered Angus cattle in Deep Creek. He died in 1974.

She was a member of Potlatch Presbyterian Church, the Potlatch chapter No. 48 Order of the Eastern Star, the Mountain Home Grange and the “3 and 1 Club.” She was also a member of the American Angus Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Thompson of Potlatch and Joyce Wissler of Mexico; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Potlatch Ambulance Fund.

Barbara Couts Spokane

Memorial service for Barbara S. Couts, 70, is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Couts, who died July 7, was born in Findlay, Ohio.

She moved to Spokane in 1983 with her husband, Bob.

She was a member of the Valley General Hospital Auxiliary, the American Association of Retired Persons, the Valley Senior Center and Sing-A-Long Group, the Valley Grandmother’s Club and Project Joy. She had graduated from the Citizen’s Academy and was a Senior Volunteer with the Spokane Police Department.

She is survived by her husband; one son, Robert Warren of Ohio; four stepsons, Ned Warren Jr. and David Couts, both of Phoenix, James Couts of Auburn, Calif., and John Couts of Santa Rosa, Calif.; five stepdaughters including June Marek of Missoula, and Joan Smith and Nancy Nace, both of Phoenix; and numerous grandchildren.

George Orchard Spokane

Rosary service for George F. Orchard, 81, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 9 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church in Post Falls. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Orchard, who was born in Crary, N.D., died Thursday.

He had lived in Spokane for 50 years and was an independent real estate broker for more than 40 years.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by two sons, Douglas Orchard of Spokane and Craig Orchard of Bath, Maine; one daughter, Mary Ackerman of Soap Lake, Wash.; his companion, Margaret Boatsman of Spokane; five sisters, Collette Wengler, Mary Hurst, Irene Rabel and Rose Hitchcock, all of Spokane, and Beatrice Weinand of Quincy, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Edward Vecchio Spokane

Funeral Mass for Edward J. Vecchio, 82, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. His nephew, Rev. Armand Nigro, S.J., will be the celebrant. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Henessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Vecchio, who died Thursday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

He began working for Great Northern Railway when he was 15 and retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1973 after 46 years.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Vecchio; one brother, Frank Vecchio of Spokane; three sisters, Margaret Nigro, Eva Gagliardi and Lillian Jannak, all of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mater Dei Institute.

Jessie Chalk Spokane

Memorial service for Jessie H. Chalk, 86, will be at 2 p.m. today at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Chalk, who died Thursday, was born in Colton, Wash.

She had worked at Deaconess Hospital as a special duty nurse and in Spokane doctor offices. She also worked in a nursing home for 10 years.

Her husband, Francis “Bill” Chalk, died in 1993.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Wiens of Nine Mile Falls and Michelle Jones of Spokane; one brother, Claude Simpson of Priest Lake, Idaho; one sister, Hazel Mears of Germantown, Ohio; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shadle Park Presbyterian Church or the Salvation Army.

John Hartford Spokane

No service will be held for John E. Hartford, at his request.

Mr. Hartford, 92, died Tuesday.

He was born in Stevens Point, Wis., and had lived in Spokane for 35 years. He worked for Pennwalt Chemical Corp.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Orzella Hartford; two daughters, Lorene Rich of San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Werner Motz of Marina, Calif.; two granddaughters and numerous great-grandchildren.

Gladys Bailey Cummings Nashville, Tenn.

Graveside memorial service for Gladys Bailey Cummings, 93, is planned for 10 a.m. Monday at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Cummings, who was born in Sedro Woolley, Wash., died June 14 in Nashville where she had been for the last five years.

She was a school teacher and had taught at Blair Elementary School, in Rupert, Idaho, and in the Longview/ Kelso, Wash., area.

She was a member of Fowler Methodist Church and Northside Church of Christ in Spokane, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 163.

Two husbands, Louis Bailey and Pete Cummings, preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, George Bailey of Trenton, Ill.; one daughter, Joyce Anderson of Nashville; two stepsons, Robert and Richard Cummings; six granddaughters, one grandson, 17 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
