Pence Reaches Quarters

Cheney golfer Todd Pence, a fifth-year senior at Brigham Young University, rolled into the quarterfinals of the 70th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship Thursday in Stow, Mass.

Low amateur at the recent Washington Trust Bank Lilac Invitational in Spokane, Pence beat Kevin Gai of Newington, Conn., 5 and 4, then ousted Mike Vance of Henderson, Nev., on the 19th hole.

Today, two rounds will determine the competitors for Saturday’s 36-hole final.

Optimist golf

Kyle Kelly and Britney Holt of Spokane fell behind in the third round of the Optimist International Junior Tournament in Miami.

Kelly shot an 11-over-par 82, for a total of 231, in the boys 15-17 division. He is 19 shots off the pace. Holt carded a 75 for 230 in girls 15-17. She is 16 strokes off the pace.

Legion baseball

Gil Pierce homered twice and drove in six runs as Spokane Federal Credit Union (14-5) inched ahead of idle Global Federal Credit Union (15-7) in the battle for the South Division lead by holding off Scott’s Custom Homes 14-12.

Maxwell House scored four times in the first inning before thumping Job Quest 10-2. Aaron Fryer walked with the bases full in the bottom half of the seventh inning, giving Olympic Sports a 9-8 victory over the Hillyard Boosters.

Tom Gmelch and Ray Kallaher had 11 RBIs between them as Pullman swept PAC 11-3 and 18-11.

Former Washington State University linebacker Anthony McClanahan has joined the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL.
