Kerdyk Cruises To Win
Tracy Kerdyk started quickly, then held steady for her first LPGA tour victory, winning the Big Apple Classic by four strokes in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Kerdyk, a member of the tour since 1988, ignored a 59-minute rain delay late in the round and shot a 4-under-par 68. She finished at 11-under 273, tying the lowest winning score for the event and beating four others - third-round leader Carin Hjalmarsson of Sweden; Elaine Crosby; Caroline Pierce of England; and Michelle McGann.
Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, earned $5,089 with a four-day total of 287. Robin Walton, of Clarkston, Wash., finished at 299 and earned $692.
Ed Dougherty made a slick dowhill putt for birdie at the 71st hole of the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic in Madison, Miss., building a two-stroke lead en route to his first PGA Tour victory.
Dougherty added a birdie on the par-5 18th for a 6-under-par 66. He was 16-under 272 for the tournament, two strokes ahead of Gil Morgan.
Pullman’s Kirk Triplett tied for fourth after shooting a 71 for a four-day total of 276. Triplett earned $27,563.
Jimmy Powell became the first player ever to win both the Super Seniors competition and a Senior PGA Tour event when he prevailed at the First of America Classic in Ada, Mich.
The 60-year-old Powell, of La Quinta, Calif., carded a 5-under-par 67 to finish 15-under at the 6,864-yard Egypt Valley Country Club. He was five strokes ahead of Babe Hiskey and six ahead of Larry Laoretti.
