Sandpoint Wrestler Captures Title
Jared Lawrence of Sandpoint captured the Greco-Roman championship at 103.5 pounds at the Cadet National Freestyle/Greco-Roman Wrestling Tournament recently.
Lawrence, who went undefeated as a freshman last winter at Sandpoint High School en route to winning an Idaho high school championship, won all nine of his Greco matches. He defeated James Ferguson of Seward, Neb., 4-3 in the title match in the tournament held July 10-15 at Lincoln, Neb.
He also finished second in free-style, winning 10 straight matches before falling 6-5 in the title match to Eric Larkin of Tucson, Ariz.
Lawrence, his brother Brett, a three-time state champion, and Pat Larson - who led Sandpoint to a second straight State A-1 championship last winter - are competing this week in the junior national championships at Fargo, S.D.
Basketball
Jennifer Kerns of Coeur d’Alene scored all 12 of her points in the second half and spearheaded a defensive attack that helped her team win in a national all-star girls basketball game Sunday in Green Bay, Wis.
The Washington State-bound Kerns helped her “Blue” team rally to defeat the “Red” team 96-81 at the North American Youth Basketball USA Parade High School Senior Girls All-American game.
The teams consisted of high school seniors from around the country.
Kerns’ team trailed 59-43 at half-time.
The two all-star teams will participate in the World Youth Tournament, which tipped off Monday in Milwaukee.
