No Progress In Talks Between Nba, Union
The resumption of contract talks between the NBA and union leaders produced no progress Tuesday, and a member of the union’s negotiating team quit amid a dispute over how much money the league is making.
Russ Granik, the league’s deputy commissioner, said the league made some concessions to the players, but there is an “overwhelming” gulf between the two sides on the contentious issue of a luxury tax.
Simon Gourdine, executive director of the union, says he has a “clear mandate” from the players to eliminate the luxury tax altogether.
Gourdine faces problems not only from the league’s negotiators and dissident players, but from one of his consultants. On Tuesday, he accepted the resignation of W. Charles Bennett, a financial consultant for the NBA Players Association during the negotiations.
