Spokane Police Earn National Recognition

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Spokane Police Department recently earned kudos for its community policing efforts in a national competition aimed at honoring innovative public safety programs.

The department was one of three in a field of 111 cities recognized by the National League of Cities, of Washington, D.C., for rethinking public safety through community involvement.

“This award is for every citizen in the community,” said Cheryl Steele, who heads up Spokane’s community policing program. “It was a collaborative effort from bottom to top.

“It wasn’t about one agency. It was through the example of partnership.”

The award was based on six criteria, including the department’s success in identifying community needs and in applying the program to other communities.

Two other cities joined Spokane for top honors. Wichita, Kan., was recognized for its “Neighborhood Initiative” program, and San Leandro, Calif., for its “Home Earthquake Strengthening Program.”

Winning cities will be honored at an awards ceremony during the National League of Cities conference in Phoenix, Nov. 28 through Dec. 2.
