Dream Team Iii
All those perceived as showoffs and troublemakers from last year’s United States team at the world championships have been locked out of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
According to a person close to USA Basketball, written or oral acceptances have already been received from the first 10 players picked by the selection committee. The list does not include many of the controversial young guns from last summer’s world championship team like Derrick Coleman, Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson and Shawn Kemp.
Among the players who will be officially announced in a nationally televised show on Sunday are four returnees from the 1992 Olympic team: Utah’s Karl Malone and John Stockton, San Antonio’s David Robinson and Chicago’s Scottie Pippen.
The rest of the selections are Orlando’s Shaquille O’Neal and Anfernee Hardaway, Indiana’s Reggie Miller, Houston’s Hakeem Olajuwon, Detroit’s Grant Hill and Milwaukee’s Glenn Robinson. Two more players from the National Basketball Association, most likely another guard and a power forward, will be picked later this year.
