Wilander Beats Russian
Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, the top seeds, and two Swedes advanced to the semifinals of the $2.5 million Canadian Open tennis championships.
Agassi, the No. 1 seed and defending champion, trailed unseeded fellow American MaliVai Washington 5-3 in the first set, but came back to win 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
No. 2 Pete Sampras fell behind 0-4 in the opening set but recovered to dispatch seventh-seeded Michael Stich of Germany 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Veteran Mats Wilander and 12th-seeded Thomas Enqvist both pulled upsets, with Enqvist bouncing third-seeded Michael Chang of the United States 6-3, 6-4 and Wilander downing fourth-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
In today’s semifinals, Wilander meets Agassi and Sampras plays Enqvist.
