Wandering Cows Killed On Highway After Accident

From Staff Reports

Two more cows died Friday, one day after a cattle truck overturned and left several dead animals scattered beside the highway and more than 70 wandering the nearby hillsides.

The cattle truck was headed north on U.S. Highway 95 when it tipped over on a curve 12 miles south of Coeur d’Alene, according to Idaho State Police.

The crash killed 11 cattle - seven outright and four others euthanized because of their injuries. The surviving animals scattered into the wooded hills.

Police and ranchers worked into the evening Thursday rounding up the livestock and cleaning up the wreckage on the highway, said Dusty Rhoads, Kootenai County’s animal control officer.

Although they rounded up 60 cattle, they were not able to catch about 10 of the animals, Rhoads said. The animals were still loose Friday morning.

Two cows died after they were hit late Thursday and early Friday by vehicles traveling on the highway, Rhoads said.

He asked drivers to remain cautious when passing through the area.
