White Attains Cycle With Six-Hit Game
National League
Even for a streak hitter such as Rondell White, his performance Sunday in San Francisco was nothing short of extraordinary.
White set a Montreal record with six hits, hitting for the cycle and scoring five runs, as the Expos beat the San Francisco Giants 10-8 in 13 innings. The Giants scored four runs in the ninth to force extra innings.
White went 6-for-7 with a solo homer and two doubles, drove in three runs and stole a base. He became the fourth Montreal player to hit for the cycle.
“Once I get a hit in my first at-bat, I know I’m going to have a good game,” said White, who raised his average 44 points to .373. “When I get in a streak, I do pretty well. Usually my homers come close together.”
White tripled with two outs in the 13th, leading to Tim Laker’s two-run triple that gave the Expos a three-game sweep at Candlestick Park for the first time since August 1984.
