‘Speed,’ Bullock Come Out Ahead With Mtv Awards

John Burman And Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn The Hollywood Reporter

Top-nominated film “Speed” and its on-the-job-trainee bus driver, Sandra Bullock, pulled away from the pack at Saturday’s MTV Movie Awards with five wins, while “Pulp Fiction” cleaned up with the best film honor.

“First of all, I want to know what I did so I can do it again and work it for everything it’s worth,” a playful Bullock said upon receiving the most desirable female award.

Hosted by Courteney Cox and Jon Lovitz, the fourth annual show airs on MTV at 9 p.m. Thursday.

Bullock also won the female performance trophy. She beat out strong competition, including Jodie Foster, Meg Ryan, Demi Moore and Sharon Stone.

Bullock also shared the prize for best onscreen duo with co-star Keanu Reeves, while the film’s Dennis Hopper terrorized his way to the best villain award.

“Speed’s” bus escape/airplane explosion sequence took the best action award.

Winners of the gold-plated popcorn tub were picked by a national poll of MTV viewers.

Though the older-skewing Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Hollywood Foreign Press Association handed “Forrest Gump” more chocolates than one simpleton could chew during awards season, the MTV generation decided that truth lies in “Fiction” - “Pulp Fiction,” that is. John Travolta and Uma Thurman won best dance sequence award - a new category this year.

Though not in attendance, Brad Pitt received two awards, among them best male performance for “Interview With the Vampire,” triumphing over powerhouse Tom Hanks, the late Brandon Lee, Reeves and Travolta. Pitt also picked up the statuette for most desirable male. The film’s Kirsten Dunst captured the breakthrough performance award.
