Ex-Spokane Indian Carves Up Texas

Associated Press

American League

Matt Mieske, a former Spokane Indian star, broke a fifth-inning tie Wednesday with his first homer of the season to lead Milwaukee past visiting Texas.

With the score tied at 2, Mieske connected off Darren Oliver (3-2) for his first homer since July 21, 1994. The Brewers went on to win 4-2.

Mieske is 3 for 6 with three runs and three runs batted in since replacing right fielder David Hulse, who fouled a ball off his right leg during the Brewers’ 14-2 victory Wednesday night.

Mieske was the 1990 Northwest League MVP.

Rookie Sid Roberson gave up just four hits, walked three and struck out five in six innings as the Brewers won consecutive games for the first time this month.

Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 3

Toronto

Toronto became the first A.L. team to solve knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, scoring four runs in the first and going on to defeat Boston.

Wakefield, released by Pittsburgh before the season, then signed by the Red Sox and called up from Pawtucket on May 27, took four consecutive victories and a 0.54 earned run average into the game. With the help of an error by Boston second baseman Luis Alicea, the Blue Jays scored four runs in the first.

Indians 5, Orioles 2

Cleveland

Albert Belle homered and Eddie Murray moved within 12 hits of 3,000 in his career as Cleveland beat Baltimore for its fourth straight win.

The Indians improved baseball’s best record to 33-11, extending the best start in team history. They have won 11 of 12 games overall and eight in a row at Jacobs Field, where they are 18-4 on the year.

Baltimore, swept by the Indians in a three-game series for the first time since 1988, has lost four in a row.

Yankees 12, Tigers 3

Detroit

Melido Perez allowed four hits in 6 innings, and New York hammered Pat Ahearne in his major league debut for Detroit.

With owner George Steinbrenner watching again from a seat behind the dugout, homers from Paul O’Neill, Mike Stanley and Bernie Williams helped the Yankees to consecutive wins for the first time this month.

Twins 8, Angels 5

Anaheim, Calif.

Pat Meares hit a solo homer to tie the game and Scott Leius won it with a three-run shot later in the seventh inning as Minnesota defeated California.

Jerald Clark drove in two runs with a triple and his third homer, and Kirby Puckett and Scott Stahoviak had RBI doubles in the first inning for the Twins to down the seraphs.

Athletics 8, White Sox 5

Oakland, Calif.

Mark McGwire’s threerun homer off Roberto Hernandez capped a fourrun Oakland rally in the eighth inning, giving the Athletics a victory over Chicago.

McGwire’s homer, his major league-leading 18th of the season, capped a game of late-inning lead changes. Dennis Eckersley pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

Clearing the bases

Toronto’s Roberto Alomar has played 88 consecutive error-free games, dating back to July 24, 1994. The A.L. record for consecutive error-free games by a second basemen is held by Jerry Adair of Baltimore, who did it for 89 games in 1964 and 1965. Ryne Sandberg of the Chicago Cubs has the major league record, playing 123 consecutive games without an error in 1989-90.
