Mark Catalano captured medalist honors by six strokes after two rounds of qualifying at the 78th Western Junior Golf Championship at Hot Springs, Va.

Roger Lavoie of Pasco, Wash., was third low among the 196 players with 146.

Catalano, a 19-year-old North Carolina sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, had a 5-under 66 on The Homestead’s Lower Cascades course and a 73 Wednesday on the Cascades for a 139.

Kevin Angle of Charlotte, N.C., finished second with a two-day total 145.

Mario Andretti, along with Frenchmen Bob Wollek and Eric Helary of France, led the first day of trials for the Le Mans 24 Hours race at Le Mans, France. Their Courage Porsche C 34 had the top time of 3 minutes, 53.06 seconds for the 8.45-mile circuit.
