Bengals Could Be Moving

Compiled From Wire Services

Fans could know by Thursday night whether the Cincinnati Bengals will stay put or move to Baltimore.

City and Hamilton County negotiators are trying to resolve their differences and meet demands from Mike Brown, president and part owner of the football team, for a signed agreement by Thursday to build a new stadium for his team.

Otherwise, Brown warns he will negotiate exclusively with the Maryland Stadium Authority, which has wooed the Bengals with an offer of a new stadium and a lucrative financial deal.

John Moag Jr., chairman of the Maryland Stadium Authority, said during the weekend that he expects Brown will try to stay in Cincinnati, where the Bengals began play in 1968.

The Houston Oilers, hoping to add a veteran quarterback by the start of training camp July 20, are looking at Jim McMahon and Jay Schroeder.

McMahon and Schroeder have taken teams to Super Bowl championships. Both are free agents who played for Arizona last season.

Earlier this month, the Oilers cut last year’s starting quarterback, Cody Carlson, after he failed his physical. Oilers coaches have said they will not push No. 1 draft pick Steve McNair into the starting role.

The San Francisco 49ers do not plan legal action over the Los Angeles Raiders’ planned move to Oakland.

“It has never been our intention to pursue independent litigation concerning this matter, regardless of how it is resolved,” 49ers president Carmen Policy said.

It had been reported the 49ers might try to block the move, claiming territorial exclusivity. If approved, the Raiders will play at Oakland Coliseum - just across San Francisco Bay from the 49ers’ Candlestick Park.

The Philadelphia Eagles released center David Alexander, making the eight-year veteran a free agent.

Alexander joined the Eagles in 1987 as a fifth-round draft pick from Tulsa. He appeared in 124 games, starting in the last 108 regular-season contests.
