U.S. Wins At Henley

Compiled From Wire Services

U.S. victories were the order of the day as the Henley Royal Regatta began.

Syracuse had what coach Bill Sanford admitted was one of his team’s most propitious opening days.

“It’s nice to get off with wins,” Sanford said, after his varsity eight defeated Ireland’s Defence Forces Rowing Association by 2 1/4 lengths in the Thames Challenge Cup, followed in the afternoon by Syracuse’s four with coxswain victory over another Irish crew, Queen’s University, Belfast, in the Britannia Challenge Cup.

Washington’s junior varsity heavyweight eight dropped its racing cadence to 26 strokes a minute throughout the body of its race. But no courtesy by the Huskies could diminish their 3 1/2-boat-length lead over Japan’s Mitsubishi Boat Club, knocking Mitsubishi out of the Thames Cup. Washington advanced to a muchanticipated race today against Brown University’s freshmen heavyweights.
