Legendary Cyclist Dies
Alfred Goullet, a champion professional bicycle racer early in the century, died Saturday at a retirement home. He was 103.
His peak bicycling years were between 1910 and 1920. Known for his remarkable endurance, Goullet set a world record of 1 hour 49 minutes, 8 seconds in the 50-mile race, a mark that still stands.
The biggest prize he ever won was $50, an impressive sum at the time. Goullet’s racing career ended in 1924 at age 35.
