3 Shutouts, Bad Weather In Gsl Soccer

Three shutouts highlighted a rainy, stormy first day of Greater Spokane League boys soccer Monday.

Bryan Giddens scored twice as University blanked Rogers 6-0, outshooting the Pirates 31-5.

Lewis and Clark made Dan Thompson’s first-half goal stand up for a 1-0 victory over Central Valley.

Rich Cullen’s strong play in goal kept North Central at bay as Mead overcame the Indians 3-0 in a game suspended 10 minutes by thunder and lightning.

In the other opener, all the goals came in a 25-minute period late in the second half as Gonzaga Prep bested Shadle Park 3-2.

Joe Ascolese scored twice for G-Prep, including the winner at the 76-minute mark in a game suspended for 5 minutes in the first half because of hail. Jeremy Stuart scored both goals for Shadle.

Baseball

Five errors proved Gonzaga University’s undoing as the Bulldogs dropped a 4-3 decision to Nevada in the first round of the 1995 Pepsi/ Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif.

Jerrod Wong (1-2) pitched the distance for GU (6-6), allowing nine hits and three walks, but only two of the Nevada runs were earned.

Andy Norton singled in Wong with GU’s first run in the fourth inning for a 1-1 tie. Brendan Hare highlighted a four-hit day with a run-scoring single in the sixth and Casey Olson added a sacrifice fly for the Gonzaga runs.

Basketball

Disappointment.

In a word, that pretty much sums up the feelings of Washington State women’s coach Harold Rhodes when the Cougars (16-11) were passed over for both the NCAA and National Women’s Invitational Tournament.

“It was a major disappointment, not so much with the (NCAA) selection committee, but just with myself,” he said.

He felt the Cougars may have missed the NCAA by one game, but when champion Stanford gained just a No. 2 seed, he realized the Pac-10 wouldn’t get six spots. And he said the NWIT looks only at 19- and 20-win teams.

“That almost eliminates any team from the Pac-10,” he said, “because if you have 19 or 20 wins, you’re definitely going to … receive an NCAA Tournament bid.”

Tennis

The Idaho men ran their record to 9-7 with wins over nationally ranked Purdue and Nevada, both 4-3, during the weekend in Boise.

Keith Bradbury led the way from No. 2 singles as the only Vandal to win both his singles matches.
