Robert Baker Wenatchee

Memorial service for Robert W. “Win” Baker, 76, is set for 2 p.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church in Wenatchee. Jones and Jones Funeral Directors of Wenatchee is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Baker, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, died Friday. He graduated from Potlatch (Idaho) High School and attended the University of Idaho until 1941, when he enlisted in the Army.

In 1946, he became partners with Bob Zachow in a Spokane accounting firm.

In 1950, he was recalled to active duty and served during the Korean War. In 1952 he moved to Wenatchee and became a partner in another accounting firm. In 1955 he become the administrator of the Wenatchee Valley Clinic, where he served until 1972.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Wenatchee and was involved in several professional and service organizations.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Helen; two sons, Marshall Baker of Boise and Douglas Baker of East Wenatchee; two daughters, Barbara Murphy of Concord, Calif., and Holly Cattin of Vancouver, Wash.; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Louise Barstad Spokane

Service for Louise H. Barstad, 85, is set for 1 p.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Barstad, a retired journalism teacher, died Saturday. She was born in St. Marys, Ohio, and had lived in Spokane for 42 years.

She worked on newspapers in Ohio, New York and Michigan and published newspapers in Texas and North Dakota. She received her master’s degree at Eastern Washington State College and taught journalism at Central Washington State College.

In 1959, she began a 25-year career with the Spokane School District.

She was active in the Greater Spokane Council on Aging, the American Association of Retired Persons, and the city Parks Department senior program, and also started The Senior Times.

Her husband Adolph Barstad, died in 1950. She is survived by three sons, Peter Barstad of Denver, Jonathan Barstad of Spokane and James Barstad of Richland; one daughter, Francine Sallee of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Frances Akers Spokane

Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation for Frances S. Akers, 86.

Mrs. Akers died Saturday at home. She was born in Portland and attended the University of Oregon and Oregon State University.

She moved to Spokane in 1947 and was active in St. Catherine’s Guild at St. John’s Cathedral and the Josie Shadle Comstock Guild at St. Luke’s Hospital. She worked for Camp Fire Girls from 1958-74 and was executive director from 1968-74.

Her husband, George Akers, died in 1990. She is survived by one son, George Akers Jr. of Seattle; one daughter, Karen Dickie of Madison, Ind.; and two grandchildren.

Delena Gunning Spokane

Memorial service for Delena J. Gunning, 64, is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gunning, who was born in Buffalo, Mo., died Sunday. She grew up in Spokane and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

She was the manager of the Mayfair and Trio restaurants for many years and retired in 1990.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Henry Gunning; one daughter, Sydney Akley of Sweet Home, Ore.; two sons, Dick and Randy Gunning, both of Spokane; one brother, Gary McGeorge, and one sister, Gayla Jenson, both of Spokane; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Thomas Needham Spokane

Service for Thomas E. Needham, 51, is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Newport (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mr. Needham, who died Thursday, was born in Portland.

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital from 1983 until 1993.

He was a member of 4-H in Benewah, Idaho, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5924 in Elk. He was a member of the Clallum Indian Tribe.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Susanne Thomas; one son, Scott Hahn of Spokane; two daughters, Ronda Nye and Michelle Needham, both of Spokane; four sisters, Peggy Ingersall, Wilda Thibedeau and Donna Irvan, all of Spokane, and Nancy Smith of Arizona; two brothers, Sam Wilson of Wisconsin and Michael Wilson of Kentucky; and three grandchildren.

Frank Pasco Spokane

Rosary for Frank Pasco, 82, is planned for 3 p.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Pasco, who died Saturday, was born in Roslyn, Wash.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union and was a truck driver. He had lived in Spokane for more than 52 years and was a member of the Catholic church.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Susie; two sons, Frank Pasco of California and Edward Pasco of Spokane; one sister, Emma Stork of Arvada, Colo.; one brother, Emil Pasco of Cle Elum, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Doris McGill Usk, Wash.

Service for Doris G. McGill, 74, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at ShermanKnapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. Burial will follow at Newport Cemetery.

Mrs. McGill, who was born in Haycreek, S.D., died Sunday from cancer.

A homemaker, she moved to Newport from South Dakota in 1936. She was a member of Locke Church of Christ, the Locke Grange and the Homemakers Club of Cusick, Wash.

Her husband, Lloyd “Snap” McGill, died in 1989. She is survived by two sons, Dean and Larry McGill, both of Spokane; three brothers, Robert Curtis of Bellingham, Ted Curtis of Arlington, Wash., and Dale Curtis of Elk; one sister, Ollie Harvey of Spokane; seven grandsons, one granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.

Lilian Tarbet Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Lillian Harriett Tarbet, 98, will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home, Newport.

Mrs. Tarbet died Friday at Mountainside Care Center in Sandpoint after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Old Ham, S.D., and moved from Harlowton, Mont., to Newport 37 years ago.

Her husband, Edwin, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Raymond Aicher of Espanolla, N.M., and Paul Aicher of Bozeman, Mont.; one daughter, Viola Weber of Newport; five stepdaughters; one sister, Helen Kurschner of Minneapolis; one brother, Jewel Gould of Barron, Wis.; seven grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Joseph Meusy Inchelium, Wash.

Burial Mass for Joseph O. Meusy, 95, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Michael’s Mission in Inchelium. Burial will be at Hall Creek Cemetery in Inchelium. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Meusy, a lifetime Inchelium resident, died Sunday.

He worked for the White Pine and Sash Co., farmed in the Inchelium area and operated the Round Lake Resort for 80 years. He retired in 1983.

He was a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes. He served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ivy Meusy; one stepdaughter, Anona Setzer of Benson, Ariz.; four sisters, Dorothy Fredendahl of Chewelah, Wash., Estella Gallagher of Spokane, Viola Kaddatz of San Antonio, Texas, and Bea Fifer of Inchelium; two brothers, George Meusy of Inchelium and Lawrence Meusy of Spokane; four grandchildren and four great<grandchildren.

Lloyd Blackwood Spokane

Service for Lloyd W. Blackwood, 82, is planned for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Private burial will follow. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Blackwood, a 71-year Spokane resident, died Monday. He was born in Redmond, Wash.

He was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union and worked for George Laue Plumbing and Painting.

His wife, Gertrude, died in 1985. He is survived by one sister, Grace Lamb of Spokane; and one brother, Cecil Blackwood of Northridge, Calif.

David Vetter Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for David “Dave” Lynn Vetter was held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Burial followed at Grandview Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion Post.

Mr. Vetter, 47, died of a heart attack Thursday in Tarrys, British Columbia.

He was born in Bonners Ferry and attended schools in Boundary County. He served in the Army from 1965 to 1972 and returned to Bonners Ferry after his discharge.

He worked as a gyppo logger and a truck driver. He was working for Anderson Road Builders and Selkirk Seed before his death.

Mr. Vetter was an avid horseman and team roper. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and rodeo.

He is survived by two sons, Robert E. Vetter and Richard E. Vetter, both of Bonners Ferry; his mother, Helen Vetter of Moyie Springs, Idaho; one sister, Carol Mesenbrink of Moyie Springs; two brothers, Eugene Vetter of Barstow, Calif., and Leslie Vetter of Moyie Springs; and one granddaughter.

Zephra Moen Spokane

Service for Zephra D. Moen, 79, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Moen, a homemaker, died Sunday. She was born in St. John, Wash., and had lived in Spokane for 40 years.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Henry Moen; two sons, Jeff and Jay Moen, both of Spokane; two brothers, Art Pierson of Spokane and Bill Pierson of Hayden Lake, Idaho; four sisters, Laverne Rotchford of Hayden Lake, Ethel Gosney of Colfax, Wash., and Fae Arrowsmith of California, and her twin sister, Jeffra Rice of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Liane McGavran Shelton, Wash.

Memorial service for Leland Liane McGavran was held Tuesday at Newport Cemetery, Newport, Wash.

Mrs. McGavran, who died Friday at a Spokane care center, was born in Green Castle, Miss. She was a high school graduate and a homemaker.

She had lived throughout the Northwest and in Shelton for five years prior to her death.

Mrs. McGavran enjoyed reading and loved cooking and sewing.

Her husband of 50 years, Wilbur McGavran, died in 1982.

Survivors include five daughters, Patricia Howard and Barbara Vasicek, both of Spokane, Norma Gerde of Seattle, Carol Henthorne of Tucson, Ariz., and Linda McVey of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sons, Larry McGavran of Ponca City, Okla., Richard McGavran of St. Louis and Wayne McGavran of Spokane; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Wayne Bretthauer Seattle

Memorial service for Wayne Bretthauer, 43, will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River, Idaho.

Mr. Bretthauer, an administrator for the mentally and physically handicapped, died Thursday in a Spokane nursing home after a long illness.

He was born and raised in Priest River and graduated from Priest River High School and the University of Idaho. He served in the Navy from 1969-72 as a navigator on a nuclear submarine. He had lived in Seattle for 12 years before his death.

Survivors include one son, Aaron S. Bretthauer of Moscow, Idaho; his parents, Ken and Elaine Bretthauer of Priest River; three brothers, Carl Bretthauer of Colville, Wash., and Todd Bretthauer and Brad Bretthauer, both of Newport, Wash.; one sister, Stacy Bretthauer Cleavinger of Hauser Lake; and his grandmother, Helena Crysler of Newport.

Gilbert Rassier Spokane

Service for Gilbert J. Rassier, 82, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pines Mausoleum. There will be private burial. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rassier, who died Monday, was born in Grenor, N.D.

He was a World War II Army veteran and received the Purple Heart. He had lived in Spokane for 50 years and worked in the Valley as a mail carrier.

His wife, Helen, died in 1984. Survivors include three sisters, Blanche Kracher of Spokane Magdaline Frieler of Bradenton, Fla., and Ann Marie Horgan of Williston, N.D.

Allie Tachell Chattaroy

Private service will be held for Allie Lois Tachell, 68. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Tachell, a 30-year Chattaroy resident, died Sunday. She was born in Roundup, Mont.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Darrell Tachell; three daughters, Deanne Stone, Patricia Zumwalt and Jacquie Roark; four sons, Ronald, Richard and David Stone, and Daniel Tachell; two brothers, Donald and Robert Rose; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
