Falcon Followed Blue Light Special

Associated Press

Attention Kmart shoppers: Watch out for the falcon in the infants department.

Shoppers at the Sixth Avenue Kmart got a little excitement this week when a falcon flew into the store, probably through open doors near the garden department.

Employees noticed the bird Monday night. On Wednesday, it still was flying around above the racks and perching on signs, to the delight of small children and other shoppers.

“Any department seeing the falcon, dial 299 please,” an intercom message advised employees.

The falcon is believed to be a yearold female merlin, a small, compact bird with a dark terminal band on the tail. Its wingspan was estimated at 2 to 3 feet.
