Mead Tops U-Hi 1-0, Shares Lead
The Mead Panthers moved into a tie for first place with idle Gonzaga Prep in the Greater Spokane League soccer race Wednesday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the University Titans.
In other games, Central Valley defeated Rogers 2-1, North Central downed Shadle 3-2 and Lewis and Clark stopped Ferris 1-0.
The Panthers, who are 5-0 overall and 0-0 in overtime games, were tied with the Titans (2-2-2-0) until the 73rd minute when Mead’s Mark Lupton scored off a Pat Nelson throw-in.
Mead and Gonzaga Prep will meet for first place Monday at Mead providing both win games Saturday.
At CV, the Bears (2-3-0-1) survived a scare from the last-place Pirates (0-6-0-0) before prevailing 2-1. Jason Ryder and Peter Martin scored CV’s goals while Hoa Lao had Roger’s lone score.
At Shadle, the Indians (3-1-1-0) took sole possesion of third place in the GSL with a 3-2 shootout win over the Highlanders (1-2-0-2).
Shadle struck first in regulation with goals from Ryan Vane and Peter Raber, but LC answered with scores by Paul Johnson and Cody Smith to force overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, NC bested Shadle 4-1 in the shootout.
At Ferris, the Tigers (2-2-1-0) and Saxons (0-4-0-1) played to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation, but LC prevailed 3-2 in a shootout.
Tigers goalkeeper James Malone saved three penalty kicks in a row in the shootout to preserve the win.
