Lance Armstrong won his third stage and solidified his apparent overall victory in the Tour DuPont bicycle race.

Armstrong, of Austin, Texas, left Laurent Madouas of France with 1 1/2 miles left and claimed the 120-mile Asheville to Beech Mountain, N.C., ninth-stage road race in 5 hours, 20 minutes, 51 seconds.

Armstrong increased his lead by 72 seconds and now leads teammate Andrea Peron of Italy by 3:55.

Defending champion Penn State overcame Hawaii and won the right to play top-ranked UCLA tonight at Springfield, Mass., for the men’s NCAA Division I volleyball championship.

The Nittany Lions turned back the Rainbows 7-15, 15-13, 16-14, 6-15, 15-12. UCLA made the finals with a 15-12, 15-9, 15-10 victory over Ball State.

At Brandon, Manitoba, Jarome Iginla’s goal with less than 7 minutes remaining lifted the Kamloops Blazers to a 5-4 Western Hockey League playoff victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings.

The Blazers lead the best-of-seven final series 3-2.
