University Wraps Up Gsl Baseball Championship

University’s seniors were scooting around various junior high playgrounds the last time the Titans won a Greater Spokane League baseball crown.

This season they scooted around the rest of the league to help University earn its first baseball title in four years. The Titans beat North Central 6-2 Tuesday.

The win gives the Titans an automatic berth to the Regional playoffs, which will be played at the site of the Big Nine Conference champion.

In other GSL games. Ferris beat Rogers 12-1, Gonzaga Prep beat Central Valley 10-3 and Mead beat Lewis and Clark 15-3.

University finished the season at 12-4, followed by Shadle Park and Ferris (both 11-5), Central Valley (10-6), Gonzaga Prep (9-7), Rogers (8-8), Mead (7-9), North Central (3-13) and Lewis and Clark (1-15).

Shadle and Ferris will play today at 3:45 p.m. at Seafirst Stadium with the winner to be the No. 2 seed to district and the loser the No. 3 seed. CV is the fourth seed, G-Prep fifth and Rogers sixth.

University and the winner of Shadle/ Ferris get first-round byes. The loser plays Rogers Friday at 1 p.m. while CV will play G-Prep, also at Seafirst, at 3:45 p.m.

Tuesday at U-Hi, the Titans managed just three hits against NC pitcher Nick Pugliese, but Pugliese walked eight batters and hit another with a pitch.

At G-Prep, the Bullpups’ Steve Gleason homered twice to give him eight for the year. That ties the GSL record for most homers in a season. LC’s Richie Long had eight in 1986. Gleason went 3 for 4 and finished the season batting .414.

At Ferris, the Saxons scored 11 runs in the third inning as they beat the Pirates.

At Hart Field, Mead’s Ray Hattenburg went 3 for 3 and scored three runs as the Panthers took advantage of seven LC errors.

Softball

Mead defeated LC 17-4, University beat NC 3-1, Rogers beat Ferris 4-2 and G-Prep beat CV 4-2 to end the regular season.

Mead (15-1) clinched the GSL title last week and the Panthers will be the No. 1 seed in the district playoffs.

U-Hi (13-3), Rogers (12-4), NC (9-7), CV (8-8), G-Prep (7-9), Shadle Park (4-12), Ferris (3-13) and LC (1-15) round out positions two through nine. The top six go to districts, starting Thursday at Franklin Park.

Rogers plays G-Prep at 3:45 p.m. and NC will play CV at 6. Mead and U-Hi get automatic berths to the regionals.

At Ferris, Shannon Zahrowski drove in two runs for Rogers.

At U-Hi, pitcher Jamie Fox allowed her first run in 24 innings in getting the win.

At Hart Field, Mead’s Kelly Kinder scored four runs, had two hits and an RBI in the Panthers’ blowout of the Tigers.

At G-Prep, pitcher Katie Shrope pitched a complete game.
