Microsoft To Launch Windows 95 Aug. 24

Microsoft Corp. has set Aug. 24 as the date for rollout of its Windows 95 operating system, disclosing for the first time the start of what will likely be the biggest product launch in the history of the personal computer industry.

“It is currently Microsoft’s plan of record to launch and have product available for customers on Aug. 24,” Colleen Lacter, a Microsoft spokeswoman, said Thursday. She declined to elaborate.

Microsoft officials have said for months that the system would become available in August, always hedging with the statement that they would not ship the complicated program if it had too many bugs or was otherwise not ready for the commercial market. The system was originally slated to reach store shelves last year, but the launch date has been delayed several times.

Lacter’s statement provided the strongest confirmation yet that testing and debugging of the operating system was on schedule.

As the replacement for Microsoft’s DOS and Windows operating systems, Windows 95 is heir apparent to an estimated 70 million Windows users worldwide.

Microsoft has provided no sales projections, but analysts say that 20 million copies of Windows 95, which will sell for about $100, could be sold within 12 months of the launch.
