Community Colleges of Spokane avoided elimination from the NWAACC softball tournament at Portland Friday by defeating South Puget Sound 5-2 in its third game of the day.

The Sasquatch opened with a 2-1, eight-inning win over Pierce before falling to Lower Columbia 7-2.

CCS plays a loser-out game at 9 a.m. today against the EdmondsWalla Walla winner. Clackamas and Lower Columbia are in the winners’ bracket.

Against Pierce, Carla Coffield had a solo home run in the first and singled and scored the game-winner on a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth. Winner Deanna Fountain pitched a two-hitter and struck out seven.

The Sasquatch committed six errors in their loss to Lower Columbia. Two errors in the bottom of the fourth allowed the Red Devils to score twice for a 5-2 lead. Coffield had an RBI double in the first.

Fountain (14-3) also pitched a twohitter against SPS, allowing no hits after the first two batters. Fountain had a sacrifice fly and Coffield an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Carrie Morris’ two-run triple in the sixth put CCS ahead to stay.
