Duke Assistant Resigns

Compiled From Wire Services

Pete Gaudet, who Mike Krzyzewski chose to take over the Duke basketball team during his absence in the second half of last season, resigned from the Blue Devils program.

Gaudet, 53, had been Duke’s restrictedearnings coach the past three seasons of his 12 years there, making the position’s limit of $16,000 a year.

He said the salary became too much of a financial burden for his family to endure.

Gaudet didn’t leave without a fight over the NCAA legislation that reduced men’s basketball staffs to two full-time assistants and the restricted earnings coach.

Gaudet sued the NCAA, Duke and a company headed by Krzyzewski in 1993 over the legislation, saying the rule was unfair and caused him to deplete most of his savings. A judge ruled against him.
