Owners 2-0 In Arbitration

Associated Press

American League

Baseball owners increased their record in salary arbitration this year to 2-0 when the Chicago White Sox beat pitcher Alex Fernandez.

In a decision issued late Monday, just hours after the case was argued in New York, a three-man panel awarded Fernandez $3.25 million, four times his salary of $758,334 last year. He had asked for $3.9 million.

In 1994, Fernandez was 11-7 with a 3.86 ERA. In 170 innings, he allowed 163 hits and had 122 strikeouts.

Earlier this spring, another panel ruled in favor of Baltimore against third baseman Leo Gomez.

Two cases were argued Tuesday, both before one arbitrator. In Philadelphia, San Francisco infielder Darren Lewis asked for $1.85 million, five times his $350,000 salary last year. The team offered $1,025,000.

In Los Angeles, Dodgers pitcher Carlos Hernandez asked for $525,000, double his $265,000 salary in 1994. The team offered $300,000.

There are 20 cases remaining in arbitration, with the next case scheduled for May 31.

Royals, Appier agree

Kevin Appier, the first five-game winner in the major leagues this season, agreed with the Kansas City Royals to a one-year contract worth $4,337,500.

The figure was halfway between his request for $4,725,000 and the team’s offer of $3.95 million. He had a salary of $3.8 million last season.

The signing avoided a salary arbitration hearing for Appier, 5-1 with a 1.98 ERA. Appier, who leads the league with 53 strikeouts, has half the club’s victories this season.
