State Track Meets

When: Friday and Saturday at Boise State University.

Schedule: The majority of field events will be held Friday for all classifications, with running preliminaries in 100-meter hurdles, 100, 200, 400 and 300 hurdles; finals in 3,200 and medley relays.

All other running finals are Saturday, beginning with the A-1 and A-2 boys and girls at 8:15 a.m. PDT and the A-3 and A-4 boys and girls at noon.

Admission: General admission each day is $5; discount admission (for seniors and elementary students and high school students with activity card) $4 each day.

A-1

Defending team champions: Highland (boys), Pocatello (girls).

Team favorites: Highland and Pocatello expected to repeat.

Returning area champ: Ian Waltz (Post Falls) shot put.

At a glance: The Post Falls boys could make a serious run at a top-three finish, but the Trojans don’t have enough horses to challenge for first.

Leading the Trojan charge will be Waltz, who by himself will cause crowds to gather in the discus-shot put area for a peak at a national-caliber prep athlete. Waltz, who last month signed to attend Washington State University, is not only seeking state titles in the shot and discus, but wants the state-meet records in both, too (shot 62-6, discus 188-1). His marks at the regional meet last week were 63-0 and 196-0.

Dozens of area athletes should collect medals.

Other area athletes who could win state titles:

Shannon Olson (PF) 3,200.

Michelle Wimer (Lewiston) discus.

Shannon Siverson (PF) triple jump.

A-2

Defending team champions: Jerome (boys), Bishop Kelly (girls).

Team favorites: Jerome (boys); Vallivue and Kuna (girls).

Returning area champs: None.

At a glance: The Intermountain League will be well represented at state, but it will be by individuals, not teams.

Here are the area athletes who could win state titles:

April Near (Bonners Ferry) 110 and 300 hurdles.

Melissa Mills (Moscow) shot and discus.

Tony Smith (Moscow) 800 and 1,600.

John Bierne (Lakeland) shot and discus.

Teresa Viebrock (Lakeland) high jump.

Todd Bruce (Lakeland) 3,200.

Kevin Carey (Bonners Ferry) shot.

Jeremy Warren (Priest River) shot.

Jeff High (Bonners Ferry) discus.

Jim Noble (Lakeland) long jump and triple jump.

A-3

Defending team champions: Malad and Grangeville (boys), Ririe (girls).

Team favorites: Malad and Ririe favored to repeat.

Returning area champs: Dana Streeter (Wallace) 100 hurdles.

At a glance: Streeter, a junior, is the Panhandle’s lone A-3 athlete that will likely collect gold in Boise. She’s favored to repeat in the 100 hurdles and will challenge for top placing in the 100 and long jump.

A-4

Defending team champions: Nampa Christian (boys), Carey and Richfield, tie (girls).

Team favorites: Nampa Christian and Highland-Craigmont (boys); Carey and Richfield (girls).

Returning area champs: None.

At a glance: The North Star League teams may have to rent a Brinks truck to haul all their gold and precious medals back home.

The Falls Christian girls, for example, could finish in the top three after taking fourth last year.

For the most part, though, individuals will shine at Boise.

Here are the area athletes who could win state titles:

Becky Straw (FCA) 100 and 200.

Matt Clifford (Mullan) 100.

Mike Gow (Clark Fork) 400.

Brendon Nelson (Lakeside) high jump.

Jamey Yanik (Clark Fork) 800.

Sarah Peterson (FCA) triple jump.
